The Islamic Dilemma
Why the Qur’an’s Claims Collapse on Themselves
This is not just another minor quibble or an academic curiosity. It’s a devastating argument that exposes Islam’s core theological contradictions in a way that’s almost impossible for it to wiggle out of. Known as the Islamic Dilemma—originally sharpened by David Wood—this line of reasoning is a sledgehammer to Islam’s credibility. And it doesn’t rely on the Hadith (which Muslims themselves selectively dismiss and debate). This is straight from the Qur’an—the very book Muslims are taught to accept as infallible, perfect, and eternally preserved.
Let’s break this down fully, piece by piece.
The Qur’an’s Direct Claims
Over and over, the Qur’an insists that it confirms the Torah and the Gospel—the foundational texts of Judaism and Christianity:
-
“He has sent down upon you [O Muhammad] the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel.”
— Surah 3:3 -
“We have believed in God and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord.”
— Surah 3:84 -
“O People of the Scripture, you are standing on nothing until you uphold the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord.”
— Surah 5:68 -
“There is no changer of His words.”
— Surah 18:27
These aren’t vague nods of respect. They’re explicit affirmations:
✅ The Torah and Gospel came from God.
✅ They were valid and authoritative.
✅ God’s words cannot be changed by anyone.
✅ Jews and Christians are commanded to judge by these books.
This is Islam’s attempt to ride on the coattails of biblical revelation while claiming to be its final and perfect seal. But here’s the problem—it self-destructs.
The Qur’an vs. the Bible: Direct Contradictions
Let’s not beat around the bush. Here’s what the Bible says:
✅ Jesus is the Son of God.
✅ God is a Trinity.
✅ Jesus was crucified, died, and rose from the dead.
✅ Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ’s atoning death.
Here’s what the Qur’an says:
❌ Jesus is not the Son of God.
— “Say not ‘Three’… Exalted is He above having a son.” (Surah 4:171)
❌ God is not a Trinity.
— “They disbelieve who say, ‘God is the Messiah.’” (Surah 5:72)
❌ Jesus was not crucified.
— “They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them.” (Surah 4:157)
❌ Salvation is through obedience (law), not a Savior’s sacrifice.
These aren’t side notes or minor discrepancies—they’re core theological claims. Islam’s direct rejection of these biblical teachings cuts to the heart of what Christianity is. And it’s not just Christianity—Judaism’s foundational stories, like Abraham’s near-sacrifice of Isaac, are also rewritten in the Qur’an to bolster Islam’s narrative (shifting the sacrifice to Ishmael, Surah 37).
The Inescapable Dilemma
So let’s lay it out in plain terms:
➡️ The Qur’an says the Bible is from God and cannot be changed.
➡️ The Qur’an also says that the Bible is wrong on Jesus, God, and salvation.
You can’t have it both ways. If the Bible is God’s word, Islam is false—because it directly contradicts the Bible.
If the Bible is not God’s word, Islam is false—because the Qur’an says it is.
No third option. No escape hatch. It’s a straight contradiction—Islam affirming a book it also denies.
The Historical Reality: No Corruption
Some Muslims might try to squirm out by saying, “The Bible was corrupted after Muhammad’s time!” This is historical fantasy. We have complete manuscripts of the Bible that predate Islam by centuries—like the Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus (4th century). These texts are essentially identical to the Bibles we have today. No mysterious “corruption” after the 7th century. No evidence. Just special pleading.
Even the Qur’an’s own command to Muhammad to “ask the People of the Scripture if you are in doubt” (Surah 10:94) would be nonsense if those Scriptures were corrupted. Why ask people reading a corrupted text?
Why This Matters: Islam’s Collapse
This isn’t a petty nitpick. It’s the entire Islamic house of cards collapsing. Islam claims to be the final, perfect revelation—but it’s built on the claim that the Bible is true while also saying it’s false. That’s not faith. That’s a contradiction.
If your religion:
❌ Affirms a book it says is corrupted (making your god incompetent or deceitful)
❌ Denies the plain claims of that book (while ordering you to affirm it)
❌ Blames historical corruption that never happened
…it’s self-refuting.
Final Verdict: Islam Refutes Itself
Here’s the brutal truth: Islam is not just a “different path” or an “alternative perspective.” It’s internally incoherent. It’s intellectually bankrupt at the very core of its scripture. You can’t paper over this contradiction—it’s built into the foundation.
This isn’t about hating Muslims—it’s about seeing Islam for what it is: a tangled web of borrowed stories and conflicting claims that falls apart under the weight of its own contradictions.
So if you’re still holding onto Islam because you think it’s divinely revealed—look closer. The dilemma is real, and it’s fatal.
